Winds of change in the Caribbean

Unrest in Venezuela, global warming and reduced funds are pertinent challenges facing the Caribbean Conference of Churches (CCC). Encompassing an area from Panama and Costa Rica in the west to The Lesser Antilles in the east, and from The Bahamas in the north to Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana on the South American mainland in the south, the CCC is comprised of 33 member churches in a diverse region, where four official languages are spoken: Dutch, English, French and Spanish.

If women will not support each other to step up to the pulpit or become engaged in politics, then gender equality will not be a priority issue for leaders both in the church and in government, says Eppie Marecheau, Christian educator and president of the Christian Council for Caribbean Women. In July, she participated in a seminar organized by the Pan African Women’s Ecumenical Empowerment Network (PAWEEN), at the WCC's Ecumenical Institute Bossey.

Eine ökumenische Gruppe der Konferenz der Kirchen in der Karibik (Carribean Conference of Churches, CCC) hat die Texte für die Gebetswoche für die Einheit der Christen 2018 erarbeitet. Mit dem Thema „Deine rechte Hand, Herr, ist herrlich an Stärke“ und dem zentralen Bibeltext aus dem Buch Exodus/2. Mose 15,1-21 zeichnen sie die Situation der Christen in der Karibik in die Befreiungsgeschichte des Volkes Israel aus der Sklaverei in Ägypten ein.

Caribbean churches reflect on new directions for diaconal work

“Diakonia must be done through action, social services, advocacy and challenging systems and structures that create injustice and dehumanization of people,” said Rev. Dr Paul Gardner of Jamaica at a seminar in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which included a visit by the president of Haiti.

WCC delegation visits Cuba

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit underscored the witness and steadfastness of the Cuban churches in the midst of serious difficulties and new challenges, during a recent visit there.
